Eight of the ten best-selling smartphones are iPhones

This emerges from research from market analyst Counterpoint Research. The iPhone 13 was the best-selling smartphone in the world last year, accounting for 28% of all smartphones sold by 2022 and accounting for 5% of total smartphones sold.

Expensive Max version is popular

The iPhone 13 is followed by the 13 Pro Max, accounting for 2.6% of all devices sold. Next is the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which represents 1.7% of all devices sold in 2022.

The top 10 also includes the iPhone 12, 14 and SE and the 13 Pro and 14 Pro, together accounting for 28% of all smartphones sold globally.

Samsung A13

The only devices in the top ten are the Samsung Galaxy A13 and A03, which cost between 150 and 200 euros.

The most striking device in the top five is the iPhone 14 Pro Max. This phone only appeared in the last quarter of 2022, and this is the first time that the most expensive Max variant of an iPhone has outsold the Pro model. The iPhone 14 Pro Max was the best-selling smartphone in September, October and November last year.

iPhones in demand among Gen Z

Perhaps the growth in popularity of iPhones can be explained by further research. “Generation Z” – today’s teens and twenties – increasingly prefer the iPhone, reported The Wall Street Journal recently. This trend is visible from Europe to Asia. Young users love iPhone’s unique design, cameras, and features like AirDrop that make it easy to share photos and files.

Even in South Korea, home of Apple’s rival Samsung, the iPhone’s popularity continues to grow. About 52% of South Koreans between the ages of 18 and 29 owned an iPhone last year. In 2022, it was only 44%. At the same time, Samsung’s share remained almost the same. Globally, Samsung is still the world’s largest smartphone vendor by total number. However, the lucrative top tier seems to be leaning more and more towards Apple.

New and yellow iPhone

Speaking of the iPhone, Apple today added a new color option to the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. The devices are now also available in yellow, in addition to the existing colors blue, purple, black, silver and red.
