HMMIK viewers witness a painful discussion about the desire to have children

Myrthe and her husband Job bought a former neighborhood supermarket in 2019, which they transformed into a home. The house is completely finished downstairs, but upstairs it’s a total ruin. Myrthe wants nothing more than to have children. According to Job, that’s fine: if she gets pregnant, he can finish the top floor during those nine months. However, Myrthe does not believe in it. “Down also lasted two and a half years. Up top is harder work for him than down. I don’t want to assume that in those nine months it will become something.”

When John brings Job home a little later, the awkward moment comes. Job approaches the subject of family expansion differently than Myrthe. “When you start having kids, your childhood is really over,” he says, “and I’m not home often.” When Myrthe asks him if he will be home more often next year or the year after, he replies in the negative. “I don’t understand that, because he’s never said that before,” she said irritably.

John decides to give the couple time to discuss it. Together, they decide to pursue the work project, even though Job’s enthusiasm is hard to come by. He contributes little to the work and it’s not going very well. John brings it up and again asks about the child’s wish. “If she’s happy, then I’m happy too,” is the response. The presenter does not stop there.

“You don’t bring any energy while Myrthe is jumping and looking forward to it,” John explains. Only then does Job dare to admit that he is not yet ready to have children. “I think if I’m in control, I’ll never be ready. I would love to, but I wasn’t prepared for her to want it so badly.”

John decides to involve Myrthe in the conversation and Job takes the plunge. “We’ve been going on Saturdays for two years and I like having nothing to do on Saturdays. That’s why I wasn’t in a rush at all, because I’m not ready yet either,” Job says, referring to the his girlfriend’s desire to have children.

His words hit Myrthe hard, but she’s glad he’s finally being honest. The two then decide to continue the odd jobs in a good mood and not without results: at the end of the episode we see that the top floor is magnificent.
