Alderweireld made his debut in May 2009 for the Belgian team. He played his last international match three months ago at the World Cup in Qatar. It was a group game with Croatia which ended 0-0. With that, the Belgians were eliminated. For Alderweireld, it was his third World Cup. “It was a difficult decision, but the right one,” he says in a video, also posted on Twitter. Alderweireld previously played football for Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur, among others.
After Eden Hazard, Alderweireld is the second player of the so-called Golden Generation to drop out of the Red Devils after the disappointing World Cup in Qatar.
