Earlier in the week, FC Utrecht lost 4-1 in the quarter-finals of the cup tournament at home to fans Spakenburg, number 7 in the second division.
In the first half, there were only a few chances for the home team. Mark van der Maarel fired from close range after a Limburg error in the back. Also, Sean Klaiber was cleared by Jens Toornstra, but then he met goalkeeper Ivor Pandur.
On the other hand, there was a fine attempt from Iñigo Córdoba, but he found Vasilis Barkas in the Utrecht goal on his way.
After the restart, FC Utrecht finally took the lead. Anastasios Douvikas, Greece’s top scorer, scored on the rebound. He did so after Pandur initially saved a header from defender Mike van der Hoorn.
Kristijan Bistrovic equalized in the 69th minute. The Croatian took advantage of a defensive error at FC Utrecht. With a fine individual action, Tijjani Noslin decided the match in favor of Limburg just before the hour mark.
FC Utrecht played with Zakaria Labyad. He was in the starting lineup for the first time in over two years in an Eredivisie game. The last time the midfielder took part from the start, he was still playing at Ajax. Since then, Labyad has suffered many setbacks, including injuries. He returned to FC Utrecht in February, having initially trained there on a trial basis.
