UN members condemn Russia on eve of year-long war

Relations at the UN unchanged

Ukraine called a meeting and for the umpteenth time many countries agreed to condemn the Russian invasion. Even shortly after the start of the war, it was condemned by 141 member states. Relations at the UN have therefore not changed after a year of bloodshed.

Seven countries voted against a conviction and 32 member states abstained. China was one of the countries that did not want to pass judgment.

This General Assembly is the most important UN body that can still condemn the invasion, foreign media report. This is not possible in the UN Security Council because Russia has a right of veto. He still uses it today when it comes to the war in Ukraine.

Last night, UN chief Antonio Guterres called the Russian invasion an “insult to our collective conscience”. The Secretary General describes February 24 as a “sinister milestone for the Ukrainian people and for the international community”.

Zelensky: “Painful and difficult”

Shortly after the end of the meeting, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky gave an update on the situation in his country. The southern city of Kherson was bombed again, he said. It happens daily. Around 40,000 people are now without heating, the president said.

Zelensky also described the situation in the East as “very difficult and painful”. “But we are doing everything we can to resist them,” he said of Russian troops trying to capture Donetsk and Luhansk.

Chinese drones

The mirror reports meanwhile that a Chinese company is in talks with the Kremlin to supply drones to the Russians. It is not known on which sources the German weekly is based. This is a manufacturer who would like to deliver a hundred drones that can carry bombs of 35 to 50 kilos. According to Der Spiegel, these are similar to Iranian drones that Russia already uses.

The United States suggested last week that China might supply arms to Russia. Beijing denies this and says it will remain “neutral” in the dispute.
