5 reasons why you will hardly use your dryer anymore

1. It costs you nothing!

Alright, let’s start with the most obvious reason: you save a lot of money if you let your laundry air dry from now on. Switching on the dryer for a while is indeed quick and easy, but it is also quite expensive. According Nibud (household finance knowledge and advice center) a drying cycle currently costs around €1.95. If you were to run the dryer twice a week, it would cost you around $200 per year. Hanging the laundry, on the other hand, is virtually free, except for the purchase of your clothesline or drying rack and clothes pegs, of course.

Outside you have the most advantages

If you can hang the laundry outside, there really is a lot to be gained. First, it dries faster in good weather conditions. Wind and sun naturally remove all unpleasant, synthetic odors from laundry, leaving it smelling wonderfully fresh. The sun’s UV radiation also kills all bacteria and makes your white laundry even whiter!

But beware, wool and silk may fade in direct sunlight. It’s also best to hang colored laundry in the shade or turn it inside out if there’s really no other way. Your towels and other terry cloths can also get quite rough from the sun, so it’s also best to hang them in the shade.

You can almost always hang your laundry outside as long as it’s dry, even in cold weather! The only thing you need to pay attention to is that the humidity outside is not too high. Hanging inside? Keep ventilating!

You can also hang your laundry inside, but it is important to ventilate the room well by opening a window. If you don’t, you could have moisture or mold problems.

2. Your clothes last longer

As you may already know, your clothes wear out much faster if you use the dryer regularly. Any lint that sits in the filter after a drying cycle comes off your clothes, so it makes sense that the dryer would be disastrous for your favorite clothes. Hanging your laundry is much more sustainable, both for the environment and for your clothes. Towels and bed linen, on the other hand, can be put in the dryer for a while.

3. Not all clothes can withstand dryer temperatures

Unfortunately, all those washing instructions inside your clothes are there for a reason. For example, wool and silk cannot withstand the high temperature of the dryer. Your clothes can shrink and the quality will undoubtedly suffer. So save yourself a lot of hassle by hanging out your laundry from now on.

4. Dry and wrinkle free!

By hanging out your laundry properly, ironing is often unnecessary. If you take your laundry out of the washing machine immediately after the end of the program and hang it out carefully, it will also dry cleanly. Hang T-shirts on a hanger to avoid creases or horizontal crease lines. Unfortunately, you can’t prevent clothespin marks. But by hanging the garment by the seam or upside down, it is completely invisible!

5. Less harmful to the environment

Finally, the clothes dryer is of course also a huge burden on the environment, as pollutants and greenhouse gases are released when electricity is generated from fossil fuels. By leaving the dryer outside as much as possible, you contribute to a better environment.
